April is the fourth month of the Gregorian calendar with 30 days. It is usually associated with spring in the Northern Hemisphere and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. The name “April” is derived from the Latin word “Aprilis”, which means “to open” in Hindi.

Important Holidays in April 2026
Odisha Day: Odisha Day, also known as Utkala Dibasa, is
celebrated on 1 April in the Indian state of Odisha to commemorate the
formation of the state as a separate state from Bihar and Orissa province by
annexing Koraput district and Ganjam district from Madras Presidency.
Bhog Bihu: This festival is celebrated by the indigenous
ethnic groups of Assam and marks the beginning of the Assamese New Year. Bihu
is a tri-annual festival, Bohag Bihu being the first of the three. It is
celebrated in the second week of April.
Vaisakh: Vaisakh is traditionally celebrated on 13 or 14
April every year. This festival is important for Hindus, Buddhists and Sikhs.
On the first day of Vaishakh, many New Year festivals such as Jud Sheetal,
Pohela Bosakh, Bohag Bihu, Vishu, Puthandu are celebrated in many areas across
the Indian subcontinent.
Garia Puja: Garia Puja was originally a festival celebrated
by the tribunals of Tripura. Now everyone celebrates it in Tripura.
Basava Jayanti: Basava Jayanti honors the birth anniversary of Basavanna, a 12th-century philosopher and social reformer who founded the Lingayat faith. Celebrated mainly in Karnataka, devotees recall his teachings of equality, devotion, and social justice. The day is marked by prayers, cultural programs, and community service, reflecting his vision of harmony.
